The Lackland OSC Thrift shop is our number one source of welfare funds. The money earned from consignments at our Thrift Shop resulted in a total of more than $25,000.00 in contributions to the LOSC Welfare fund in 2006-2007. Without the countless hours worked by the staff and volunteers, we would not be able to fund the majority of our welfare charities. Please read on for more information!
Where is the Thrift Shop?
The Lackland Thrift Shop is located at 6329 Barnes Ave., near the corner of Barnes and Truemper on the basic military training side of the Lackland AFB. Click here to view a map of our location.
When are you open?
Every Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:30 am to 1:00 PM, and USUALLY on the first Saturday of each month from 9:30 am to 12:00 noon for the ever-popular "BAG SALE." In case you haven't heard, our Saturday BAG SALE is a time to take advantage of a special offer. Customers can purchase a brown bag for only $5.00 plus tax from the TSM staff. You are allowed more than one bag. Once you have your bag, you can then fill it with items from the TSM, or Thrift Shop Merchandise area (which consists of donations and expired consignment items). That's right, an entire brown grocery bag of TSM merchandise for only $5.00 plus tax!! Our TSM area consists of clothing items, uniforms, shoes, books, housewares, toys, and a multitude of treasures! And if an item is too large to fit in a brown bag (e.g., a bicycle), then you get that item for 50% off the already reduced price!
PLEASE NOTE: The Thrift Shop does NOT accept credit or debit cards for payment.
How does consignment work?
(1) Take your items (see limits and restrictions below) to the consignment area of the Thrift Shop (the entrance to the right of the main Thrift Shop entrance) during consignment hours, which are posted below. If you have heavy furniture items, leave them in your vehicle. We will be able to assist you with those.
(2) You will take a number from the volunteer at the desk and pick up your contract with instructions. If this is your first time consigning items, the volunteer will gladly go over everything with you before you fill out the contract. Then, you'll fill out the contract and wait for your number to be called.
(3) Once your number is called, the volunteer will further assist you with your consignment.
You, as the consignor, set the price of the items. Nothing may be consigned for less than $1.50. You will receive 75% of the selling price, and the Thrift Shop will receive 25%. The Thrift Shop will mail you a check for your portion of the sale. There is a $2.00 handling fee for the mailing and processing.
Items are consigned for 8 weeks (not to be confused with 2 months). If the item hasn't sold and it expires, it becomes Thrift Shop Property and is stamped TSM and placed in the TSM section of the shop. If the item doesn't sell and you want to withdraw it before it expires, there is a 10% withdrawal fee (of the original asking price) unless the item is over $150.00, and then the withdrawal fee is $15.00. If the item is a holiday item, there is NO WITHDRAWAL FEE. See the other sections of this page for additional details.
If you have any questions about consigning items, please feel free to email us at: thriftshop@lacklandosc.org.
When do you take consignments?
Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00AM to 12:00 Noon.
Bag Sale Saturdays -- We take consignments from 9:30AM-11:00AM.
Are there items that the Thrift Shop will NOT accept for consignment?
Click here for a list of items we do not accept.
Current limits for consignments
Each week you may consign a TOTAL of 16 items (1 contract per week and 16 items per contract)*.
Of those 16 items, you may consign (as long as not listed in weekly limits as posted below):
Shoes: 1 pair
Books: 3 each or 3 bundles
Clothing: 7 items, cleaned and in good condition (7 items includes all clothing, baby, children, or adult)
Purse: 1 item
*Exception: You can consign 100 items for a PCS Move, by appointment only. You will need a copy of your orders for verification. Just call the shop and ask to speak to Clare to set up the appointment.
Weekly Limits:
If you wish to hear the list of items that will NOT be accepted for the upcoming week, please call the Thrift Shop at 671-3608 during non-business hours and wait for the answering machine to pick up. The recorded message will list the non-accepted items for that week.
Consignment of Holiday Items
If a consigned holiday item is withdrawn from the Thrift Shop on or before 12:00 Noon the day of the holiday (if the Thrift Shop is open that day) or the day posted by the Thrift Shop as the last day to withdraw items before that given holiday (e.g., Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, etc.), there is NO WITHDRAWAL FEE charged to the consignor. Please note that we may not be open during certain holiday periods, so we will post specific deadlines on a holiday-by-holiday basis.
If your contract for your holiday item expires prior to the holiday, you should withdraw items before 12:00 Noon on the date they expire, or the Thrift Shop business day closest to the date they expire. For example, if your contract says your items expire October 12, you need to withdraw them before 12:00 Noon on the 11th of October. We realize this sounds terribly confusing, but our computer system would automatically reduce the prices if we set them to expire on the ACTUAL Thrift Shop business day. If you have questions, please feel free to call us.
Holiday items consigned to the Thift Shop and NOT purchased or withdrawn by the consignor on or before 12:00 Noon on the holiday (or date specified by the Thrift Shop as the cutoff date for that particular holiday) will be REMOVED from the sales floor at the close of business on the holiday or the Thrift Shop business day closest to the holiday and stored in a separate section of the shop. The item will still be available for withdrawal for a 10% fee AFTER the holiday. If the item is not withdrawn by the expiration date on your contract, the item WILL become Thrift Shop property.
Volunteers are always needed and always welcome!
The volunteers and staff of the Lackland Thrift Shop work hard to make this the best Thrift Shop in San Antonio. The Thrift Shop needs between 22 and 26 volunteers each day in order to run efficiently. We have five paid employees in addition to the 56 volunteers who average over 1000 work hours each month. Our volunteers do everything from tagging and displaying an average of 70 baskets of new merchandise each week, to loading and unloading furniture, bagging customer purchases, and pulling expired merchandise from the shelves. Our volunteers consist of LOSC members (WE NEED MORE OF YOU!!!): retirees to include male and female; widow(er)s; active duty members; and officer and enlisted spouses. If you give us a day a week, or a month, we will find a place for you!! Give us a call at 210.671.3608 or email us at thriftshop@lacklandosc.org for more information.
